Libraries of the Future

What will the library of the future be like? What can we expect to see?  Here's a nice little article from Online Universities about what we might see. But let's face it, the number one thing on the list is technology and we KNOW that's always changing!

Gamification

Do you know what Gamification is? Neither do I, but I like some of the ideas presented here on Mashable. How can we at LAPL get teens more excited?

Imagine: A patron signs onto the library account and sees a generic Avatar. Gamifying would be having the patron do something within our website to earn something to make your avatar special. (Generic: dog. Gamified: add a doghouse, fire hydrant, change the color, change the breed, etc.)

During the Summer, kids and teens could earn special badges that they could see on their library account. (Submit a book review and get a Badge. Read 25 books this summer and get the special "Bookie" badge.)

Foursquare badges, an example.

Google+ vs. Facebook

I have an account for both but I rarely use my Google+.  Facebook is established and is a household word.  Google+ is new.

I know that every time Facebook makes a forced change to their website, people complain and threaten to leave. Maybe it's time to actually investigate Google+ as an alternative.

More on Google Docs

Here is another reason to encourage patrons to use Google Docs!

A new feature in Google's word processing program let's users access the Web giant's search function and "with just a couple clicks you can look up maps, quotes, images, and much more."  To learn more, check out CNET News.

Public Libraries, 3D Printing, FabLabs and Hackerspaces--If you don't know what a FabLab or Hackerspace is, check this Youtube video out...it's an eyeopener!

Passwords and employment

Democrats to employers: Stop asking for Facebook passwords  Could this be a problem with LAPL staffers creating Facebook branch pages?

If you want to create a Facebook fan page for your branch, you need to request approval for that page.  The approval process does require that you give them the password when your create a Facebook fan page.

Smartphones and Facebook

How do people access Facebook? CNET News reports that a new study shows more people access their Facebook page through their smartphones. Though the report is for Adults 18 and older, you can imagine how many teens already to just that!

I remember a time when people actually used their phones for just talking to people.

Productivity Apps

What tools can you use to make your productivity better?

Harvard Business Review listed 8 apps.  One was for iPhones only, so I don't think that one should count. Have you ever heard of Work Flowy? What about DropBox?  Even Doodle can make scheduling meetings easier.  I've not heard of them before but I'm gonna check them out.  You should, too!

Share the apps you use to make life (or work) easier to manage.
